Things are definitely growing!

That miracle gro garden feed must be doing the trick! Everything is growing really fast! The peas are already getting to be pretty tall. Not to mention the lettuce and cabbage are getting huge.

I'm really looking forward to harvest time now. I think once I pick stuff I'll plant the jalapeño and poblano pepper seeds because it'll be warmer then. This is going to be an awesome summer for fresh food!

New Life!

Yay! The broccoli, peas, and onion seeds have sprouted out in the garden! I'm excited! Not to mention the cabbage and lettuce are getting bigger!

I decided to move the lavender and spearmint outside. They were growing mold indoors so I thought the seeds might still have a chance outside.

I can't wait to have a cabbage, lettuce, onion and tomato salad I grew in the yard! I'm excited to watch the sprouts grow into plants.

The closeup picture is one of the broccoli and the second is the whole garden!

Expansion Madness

So I started the garden with the idea of having a small plot for herbs...

Then we saw onions and had to have those...

Then the garden started out at about 5'X6'...

Now I've expanded it twice in two days. Its probably about 5'X10 now and has many more seeds and plants.

We just planted two cabbage plants and two lettuce today and have four more of each to plant. Looks like I'll be out there tomorrow or over the weekend making it even bigger. All in all this is turning out to be a bigger project than I anticipated! Still, most of the hard work is done, so now its really just tending the garden.

In any event, I will have much less time to work in the garden from now on. I just started a 6 day a week, 46 hour job that can very well grow into a career. So, here's to hoping it goes well tomorrow for my first day!

That's all for now! Hail Demeter, hail Persephone!

Genesis of a Garden

So about a week ago I get this great idea to start a garden...

That sounds like a fitting enough start to start off a blog about gardening I suppose. in any case, yesterday I plotted the garden, its probably about 6'X6' or a little bigger I'd guess, and plant the first six little red onion plants Sammi picked out for me to try growing. it was back-breaking work to say the least.

It took me an hour and a half, and that's a conservative estimate, to hoe that little patch of hardpan to make it even semi-arable. Then I had to rake in the garden soil I'd bought at OSH (which is where Sammi works, by the way) and I hoed the whole fucker again for good measure and raked it again to smooth and airate it again.

By the time I was ready to start planting, my back, knees, and various muscles were screaming at me to STOP! So I planted the six red onions and brought the cilantro and Walla-Wallas back inside for the night.

That was day one...

Today was significantly better due mainly to the presence of my wonderfully amazing fiance Sammi. We had some delivious Thai food (mine was Pad pha nang and if you like curry I highly reccommend it) then headed out back to work. We put in another 2 good hours of legitimate work before calling it quits.

So, now that little garden has a total of 12 onion plants, 4 onion seed spots, two chive seed spots, and two cilantro plants. Pretty good start to a garden. Oh, and we also set up two pots, one of tomato seeds the other of more chives, on the porch to compliment the spearmint and lavender I planted  2 days ago.

In the end it was a great start! Much more satisfying than sitting or laying on my ass playing computer games all day! Can't wait to harvest some awesome veggies!
